The conditionnel passé is essential when discussing what could have been done about climate change — expressing regret and past hypotheticals.
Formation: auxiliary (aurais/serais) + past participle
- Si on avait agi plus tôt, on aurait évité cette crise. (If we had acted sooner, we would have avoided this crisis.)
- Si les gouvernements avaient investi dans le renouvelable, les émissions auraient diminué. (If governments had invested in renewables, emissions would have decreased.)
Expressing regret:
- On aurait dû réduire les émissions il y a vingt ans. (We should have reduced emissions twenty years ago.)
- Il aurait fallu agir plus vite. (It would have been necessary to act faster.)
Discussing current consequences of past inaction:
- Si nous n'avions pas ignoré les scientifiques, nous ne serions pas dans cette situation. (If we hadn't ignored the scientists, we wouldn't be in this situation.)
