Polite debating in French requires acknowledging the other person's point before presenting your own. This is called conceding and counter-arguing.
Acknowledging first:
- Je comprends ton point de vue, mais... — I understand your point of view, but...
- C'est vrai que..., cependant... — It's true that..., however...
- Tu as raison sur ce point, néanmoins... — You're right on that point, nevertheless...
Disagreeing politely:
- Je ne suis pas tout à fait d'accord. — I don't quite agree.
- Je vois les choses différemment. — I see things differently.
- Permettez-moi de nuancer. — Allow me to add nuance.
Making concessions:
- J'admets que c'est possible, mais... — I admit it's possible, but...
- Certes, ..., mais il ne faut pas oublier que... — Certainly, ..., but we must not forget that...
Key tip: In French debate culture, it is considered polite to first validate what the other person said before disagreeing. Jumping straight to disagreement can seem aggressive.

Tu as tort !Je ne suis pas tout à fait d'accord.Saying 'you're wrong' is too direct in French debates. Use softer expressions.
Je comprends ton point de vue, mais tu as tort.Je comprends ton point de vue, mais je vois les choses différemment.After acknowledging, avoid 'tu as tort' — stay polite with softer phrasing.
Je suis pas d'accord du tout.Je ne suis pas du tout d'accord.Don't drop 'ne' in formal debates. Also, 'du tout' comes after 'd'accord'.
C'est faux ce que tu dis.Je ne partage pas ce point de vue.'C'est faux' is blunt. Use diplomatic language like 'je ne partage pas'.
Oui mais non.Certes, cependant je pense que...'Oui mais non' is too informal. Use 'certes' to concede before countering.
