Writing a Message

Formal vs. Informal

French writing has different registers:

Formal (email, letter):

Bonjour Madame / Monsieur, — Hello Madam / Sir,
Cordialement, — Best regards,
Je vous prie d'agréer... — Very formal closing

Informal (text, chat):

Salut ! — Hi!
Bisous — Kisses
À + (à plus) — See you later

Common Text Abbreviations

slt = salut (hi)
bjr = bonjour (hello)
stp / svp = s'il te/vous plaît (please)
mdr = mort de rire (LOL)
rdv = rendez-vous (meeting/date)
bcp = beaucoup (a lot)

Writing a Simple Email

Structure: 1. Greeting: Bonjour, 2. Purpose: Je vous écris pour... (I am writing to...) 3. Body: Your message 4. Closing: Cordialement, 5. Name: Your name

"Écrire" — To Write

Irregular verb: j'écris, tu écris, il écrit, nous écrivons, vous écrivez, ils écrivent
