Tone and voice in Dutch writing must be adapted to your audience. At C1 level, you should be able to shift tone deliberately and effectively.

Formal tone: Geachte heer/mevrouw, naar aanleiding van uw schrijven... Uses full sentences, formal vocabulary (gaarne, verzoeken, dienen), and the u-form.

Informal tone: Hey! Leuk dat je dit leest. Uses short sentences, colloquial words, and the jij-form.

Written irony in Dutch: Dutch writing has a strong tradition of irony: Wat een verrassing dat de minister weer te laat is. (What a surprise that the minister is late again.) The literal meaning contradicts the intended meaning.

Empathetic tone: Wij begrijpen dat dit voor u een moeilijke situatie is. (We understand that this is a difficult situation for you.) Used in customer service, healthcare, and HR.

Authoritative tone: Short, declarative sentences: Dit is onacceptabel. Wij eisen maatregelen. (This is unacceptable. We demand measures.)

Adapting tone: The same message can be rewritten in different registers. Practice converting formal to informal and vice versa to develop tonal flexibility.
