Talking about a book in Chinese
Aspect particles 着 / 了 / 过 — fine distinctions at B2
These three particles mark different relationships to time and completion:
- 着 (zhe) — describes an ongoing state or the manner of an action: 他笑着走进来。 — He came in smiling. / 门开着。 — The door is open (and remains open).
- 了 (le) — marks completion of an action or change of state: 他看完了这本书。 — He finished reading the book. / 他明白了。 — He understood (a change occurred).
- 过 (guo) — marks that an action has been experienced at some point in the past: 我看过这本书。 — I have read this book (at some point). / 他去过北京。 — He has been to Beijing.
Contrast: 曾经 vs 早已
- 曾经 (céngjīng) — once / used to (neutral past reference): 这本书曾经影响了很多人。
- 早已 (zǎoyǐ) — long ago / already by now (implies surprise): 这个道理,他早已明白了。
就…而言 — scoping a statement
- 就这本书的结构而言,它非常严谨。 — As far as the structure of this book is concerned, it is very rigorous.

Типичные ошибки
我看了过这本书。我看过这本书。过 and 了 cannot both be attached to the same verb together like this. 过 alone marks past experience. 了 after the verb marks completion of a specific instance.
他着笑走进来。他笑着走进来。着 must follow the verb it marks. The structure is verb+着+main verb, not verb+着 as a standalone prefix.
这本书曾经影响了很多人过。这本书曾经影响了很多人。过 and 曾经 both refer to past experience — using them together is redundant. Choose one.
就情节,它很精彩。就情节而言,它非常精彩。就…而言 is a fixed four-part structure. 而言 cannot be dropped — without it, the sentence sounds incomplete.
他早已知道过这件事。他早已知道这件事。早已 already implies prior knowledge. Adding 过 is redundant — both mark past relevance.
