Resultative Complements in News Stories
Resultative complements show whether an action was completed successfully. They are essential for telling news stories!
Structure: Verb + Result
- 看完 (kàn wán) — finished watching/reading
- 写好 (xiě hǎo) — finished writing (well)
- 找到 (zhǎo dào) — found (successfully)
- 听懂 (tīng dǒng) — understood by listening
In context:
- 记者终于找到了目击者。(Jìzhě zhōngyú zhǎodào le mùjīzhě.) — The reporter finally found the witness.
- 我把这篇文章看完了。(Wǒ bǎ zhè piān wénzhāng kàn wán le.) — I finished reading this article.
Narrative sequence markers:
- 首先 (shǒuxiān) — first
- 接着 (jiēzhe) — then / next
- 后来 (hòulái) — afterwards
- 最终 (zuìzhōng) — finally
Key tip: The result complement directly follows the verb with no pause — 看完, not 看了完.

Типичные ошибки
我看了完这本书。我看完了这本书。The resultative complement 完 must come directly after the verb 看, before 了 — never split them with 了.
他找到不到答案。他找不到答案。Potential complements use 得/不 between verb and result — 找不到 means cannot find. Do not repeat the complement.
我听了懂他说什么。我听懂了他说什么。听懂 is one unit — do not insert 了 between the verb and its result complement.
记者写完好报告。记者把报告写好了。When you have both a result complement and a specific object, use the 把-construction to front the object.
接着，最终发生了火灾。首先发生了火灾，接着人群疏散。接着 means next/following — it should not be paired with 最终 (finally) in the same event without intermediate steps.
