Advanced Creative Writing in Portuguese

Creative writing at C2 level demands mastery of discurso indireto livre (free indirect discourse), where the narrator's voice blends seamlessly with the character's thoughts without explicit markers. Portuguese excels at this technique through flexible word order and the subjunctive mood.

The analepse and prolepse — temporal disruptions in narrative — require precise command of Portuguese tense sequences: the mais-que-perfeito composto for nested past layers, and the futuro do conjuntivo for speculative futures. A skilled writer alternates between the pretérito perfeito simples for narrative drive and the imperfeito for atmospheric description.

Verosimilhança depends on register consistency. A character from Porto should not speak like one from Lisbon without authorial intent. The grotesco tradition, central to Portuguese literature from Gil Vicente to Saramago, uses hyperbole, physical degradation, and social satire to expose human contradictions.

A cidade, que jazia silenciosa sob a névoa, parecia abandonada

The predicate adjective 'abandonada' must agree in gender with 'cidade' (feminine), not with the subject of the relative clause.

  • Fez-se silêncio e logo todos olharam-se uns aos outros
Fez-se silêncio e logo todos se olharam uns aos outros

After 'logo' (an adverb), the clitic pronoun must precede the verb (proclisis) in European Portuguese. Enclisis after an adverb is a common error.
