Polish developed from Proto-Slavic through several stages. The oldest Polish text, Bulla Gnieźnieńska (1136), shows early forms. Jezyk staropolski (10th-15th c.) had features lost today: dual number, aorist and imperfect tenses, and different vowel length distinctions (iloczas). Sredniopolski (16th-18th c.) was the golden age of Polish literature. Latin, German, French and Italian borrowings enriched vocabulary. The 19th century saw puryzm jezykowy movements trying to replace foreign words. Modern Polish standardization occurred mainly in the 20th century.
