Emphasis Structures in Japanese

Japanese has rich particles and structures for emphasis that go far beyond simple stress. At C1, mastering these tools lets you control precisely what you highlight in a sentence.

Precise Emphasis

こそ marks the element that is the true or essential point:

Now is precisely the time to act."
You are the one truly fit to lead."

Explanatory Emphasis

This structure adds an explanatory or assertive nuance, common in writing and formal speech:

The issue is (indeed) a lack of funding."
That is precisely why reform is needed."

Both mean "even," but すら is more literary and emphatic:

Even children know." (conversational)
Even experts were surprised." (literary)

Using these particles correctly shows nuanced control over emphasis and register.

Expressões

Emphasize that now is the critical moment
Pinpoint the true essence of an issue
Stress that effort is essential for success
Strongly agree with a statement
Express absolute rejection
Qualify an opinion as strictly personal

Erros frequentes

Do not add は after こそ; こそ replaces は for emphasis.

さえ replaces も; do not stack both particles.

まさに pairs better with その通り for natural emphasis.

断じて requires a formal negative predicate, not casual だめ.

In formal explanatory style, use 仕方がない (not 仕方ない).
