The Art of Hindi Journalism
Hindi journalism occupies a distinct space in the Indian media ecosystem, blending Sanskrit-rooted formal registers with the colloquial pulse of vernacular speech. At the C2 level, mastering journalistic Hindi means understanding the tension between शुद्ध हिंदी (pure Hindi) advocacy and the hybrid Hindustani that actually dominates broadcast media.
The inverted pyramid structure (उल्टा पिरामिड) governs hard news: the most crucial information appears first, tapering toward background. A strong लीड (lead) should answer the पाँच ककार — कौन, क्या, कब, कहाँ, क्यों (who, what, when, where, why).
Editorial writing (संपादकीय लेखन) demands a clear thesis, marshalled evidence, and a call to action. The संपादकीय in leading Hindi dailies like दैनिक भास्कर or हिंदुस्तान functions simultaneously as opinion, civic education, and cultural commentary.
Source attribution is governed by the principle of निष्पक्षता (impartiality) — every claim must be traceable. Unnamed sources are noted as विश्वस्त सूत्रों के अनुसार (according to reliable sources), a phrase with significant rhetorical weight.
Feature writing (फ़ीचर लेखन) allows richer prose. Here, the journalist may deploy literary devices — उपमा, रूपक, व्यंग्य — to bring depth to reportage without sacrificing factual rigour.
