Linguistic Humour in Hindi: From श्लेष to व्यंग्य
Hindi humour is layered, culturally dense, and highly dependent on context. At C2 level, you must recognise and produce sophisticated comedic language.
श्लेष (Shlesh — Pun): The most celebrated device in Sanskrit and Hindi poetry. A word simultaneously carries two meanings:
- "कमल" can mean lotus or the name Kamal — poets exploit both
- Classic example: "हरि" means God (Vishnu), green, and monkey — poets weave all three
व्यंग्य (Vyangya — Satire/Irony): Hindi political satire has a long tradition — from Kabir's dohas skewering social hypocrisy to modern satirists like Harishankar Parsai. True व्यंग्य cuts deep without explicit statement.
Double entendre in Bollywood: Hindi film songs are famous for layered metaphorical meaning — पानी, फूल, नदी as euphemistic language, playing on listener interpretation.
Deadpan (निर्भाव हास्य): Saying something absurd with a completely straight face — a prized skill in Hindi stand-up and TV comedy.
Cultural humour devices:
- Antakshari-style wordplay (chaining words)
- Mirza Ghalib's wit — his Urdu quips are quoted constantly in Hindi discourse
- The "launda" tradition — theatrical cross-dressing comedy in folk performances

यह joke समझ नहीं आयायह हास्य का भाव समझ नहीं आयाIn literary context, हास्य-रस or हास्य का भाव is more precise than the English loanword joke
