Decoding Political Discourse in Hindi
Hindi political discourse is rich with rhetorical devices inherited from Sanskrit tradition and shaped by modern media. C1 readers must identify these techniques critically.
Rhetorical Devices (अलंकार in political use):
Anaphora (अनुप्रास-आधारित पुनरावृत्ति): Repetition of a phrase at the beginning of successive clauses:
- हम बदलेंगे, हम सुधारेंगे, हम आगे बढ़ेंगे
Tricolon (त्रिपदी): Three parallel elements for rhythm:
- रोटी, कपड़ा और मकान
- न्याय, समता और स्वतंत्रता
Rhetorical Question (वक्रोक्ति प्रश्न):
- क्या यही लोकतंत्र है? / क्या हम यह सहन करेंगे?
Framing Techniques:
- Euphemism: सैन्य कार्यवाही (military action) vs. युद्ध (war)
- Loaded language: आतंकवादी vs. विद्रोही (terrorist vs. rebel)
- Nominalization to obscure agency: विकास हुआ (development happened) — who did it?
Critical Reading Tools:
- Identify whose interests are served
- Note what is NOT said (silence as rhetoric)
- Distinguish fact from evaluation: "X happened" vs. "X was harmful"
