Anapher (Anaphora) — repeating an opening phrase:

  • Wir wollen Frieden. Wir wollen Gerechtigkeit. Wir wollen Wandel. (We want peace. We want justice. We want change.)

Trikolon (Tricolon) — groups of three:

  • Freiheit, Gleichheit, Brüderlichkeit follows the powerful rule of three.

Emotionaler Appell (Emotional appeal):

  • Denken Sie an unsere Kinder, an ihre Zukunft! (Think of our children, of their future!)

Euphemismen (Euphemisms) in political German:

  • Freisetzung instead of Entlassung (release instead of dismissal)
  • Anpassung instead of Kürzung (adjustment instead of cut)

Recognising these devices helps you critically evaluate speeches and media, a key C1 competence.
