Color adjectives and declension
In German, color adjectives decline when placed before the noun:
- Ein rotes Kleid (A red dress — neuter, indefinite)
- Eine blaue Hose (Blue trousers — feminine, indefinite)
- Ein schwarzer Schuh (A black shoe — masculine, indefinite)
After the verb sein (to be), the adjective stays unchanged:
- Das Kleid ist rot. (The dress is red.)
- Die Schuhe sind schwarz. (The shoes are black.)
To ask about color:
- Welche Farbe hat das? (What color is it?)
- Haben Sie das in Rot? (Do you have it in red?)
To describe the material:
- Das ist aus Baumwolle. (It is made of cotton.)
- Das ist aus Leder. (It is made of leather.)
The preposition aus + dative indicates material.

Erros frequentes
Ein rote Kleid.Ein rotes Kleid.With a neuter indefinite article, the adjective takes the -es ending.
Die Schuhe sind schwarze.Die Schuhe sind schwarz.After sein, the adjective does not decline.
Das ist von Baumwolle.Das ist aus Baumwolle.For material, use aus (made of), not von (from).
Ich möchte das in blau.Ich möchte das in Blau.When a color is used as a noun, it is capitalized.
