Body Parts

"Avoir mal à" — To Have Pain In

The key structure for expressing pain: avoir mal à + body part

  • J'ai mal à la tête. — I have a headache.
  • J'ai mal au ventre. — I have a stomachache.
  • J'ai mal aux pieds. — My feet hurt.

Note the contractions:

  • à + le = au: mal au dos
  • à + les = aux: mal aux yeux
  • à + la = à la: mal à la gorge

Body Parts with Articles

In French, body parts use definite articles (not possessives) with avoir mal:

  • J'ai mal à la main. (not ~~ma main~~)
  • J'ai mal au bras. (not ~~mon bras~~)

Describing Sensations

  • J'ai froid. — I'm cold.
  • J'ai chaud. — I'm hot.
  • J'ai faim. — I'm hungry.
  • J'ai soif. — I'm thirsty.
  • Je suis fatigué(e). — I'm tired.

Note: French uses avoir (to have) for many sensations where English uses "to be."
