Literary Devices & Style

Dutch literary analysis uses the same rhetorical toolkit as other European traditions, but with distinctly Dutch applications. At C2 level, you should identify and analyze these devices in authentic Dutch texts.

Litotes is deeply embedded in Dutch culture. The famous Dutch understatement operates through double negatives that affirm: niet onaanzienlijk (not inconsiderable = quite significant). This mirrors the cultural preference for modesty and indirectness.

Metafoor and metonymie function similarly to English, but Dutch compound words allow creative metaphorical compression. Woordenvloed (flood of words) packs a metaphor into a single compound.

Stylistic inversions — placing elements in unusual positions — create emphasis in literary Dutch. Groot was zijn verdriet (Great was his sorrow) achieves a dramatic effect impossible in the standard SVO order. This device appears frequently in Vondel, Multatuli, and modern literary prose.

Understanding antithese (antithesis) is essential for analyzing Dutch political oratory and editorial writing, where contrasting parallel structures drive argumentation.

Expressões

  • Groot was zijn verdrietStylistic inversion for dramatic emphasis
  • Het leven is een reisClassic metaphor: life is a journey
  • De pen is machtiger dan het zwaardMetonymy: the pen (writing) vs the sword (war)
  • Niet onaanzienlijkLitotes: not inconsiderable = quite significant
  • De stad sliep rustigPersonification: the city slept peacefully
  • Hoe meer hoe beterClimax through parallel repetition

Erros frequentes

  • Dat is een metafoor van het leven
Dat is een metafoor voor het leven

A metaphor is 'voor' (for) something, not 'van' (of).

  • De schrijver gebruikt veel litote
    De schrijver gebruikt veel litotes

The word is litotes (with -s), borrowed directly from Greek. It does not change in singular.

  • Een paradox tegenstelling
    Een paradoxale tegenstelling

Use the adjective paradoxaal/paradoxale to modify a noun, not the bare noun paradox.

  • De auteur personifieert de wind als mens
    De auteur personifieert de wind

Personification already implies human qualities — adding 'als mens' is redundant.

  • Hij overdrijft met hyperbolen
    Hij gebruikt hyperbolen

This is actually correct! But note: using overdrijven + hyperbolen together is pleonastic.
