Structuring a speech in Dutch follows a clear pattern that makes your argument compelling and easy to follow. At C1 level, mastering transitions and hooks elevates your public speaking.
Opening hooks: Start with a question, anecdote, or startling fact: Wist u dat een op de vijf Nederlanders... (Did you know that one in five Dutch people...) or Stel u voor dat... (Imagine that...).
Structuring the body: Use clear signal words: Ten eerste... (Firstly), Daarnaast... (In addition), Bovendien... (Moreover), Daarentegen... (On the other hand). These guide your audience through your argument.
Building to a conclusion: Tot slot wil ik benadrukken dat... (In conclusion, I want to emphasize that...), Samenvattend kunnen we stellen dat... (To sum up, we can say that...), Laat ik afsluiten met... (Let me close with...).
Rhetorical techniques: Repeat key phrases for emphasis (anaphora), use groups of three (tricolon), pause for effect, and end with a call to action: Het is aan ons om... (It is up to us to...).
