Dutch political discourse uses specific rhetorical devices to persuade and inspire. At C1 level, recognizing and analyzing these tools is essential for media literacy.
Anaphora (anafoor): Repeating the same word or phrase at the start of successive clauses: Wij willen verandering. Wij willen rechtvaardigheid. Wij willen een betere toekomst. This creates rhythm and emphasis.
Tricolon (drieslag): Using groups of three for impact: vrijheid, gelijkheid, broederschap — a universal rhetorical pattern that Dutch politicians frequently employ.
Emotional appeal (emotioneel appel): Politicians use loaded language to evoke feelings: onze kinderen, onze toekomst, hardwerkende Nederlanders. Recognizing these appeals helps you critically analyze discourse.
Hedging in politics: Politicians often use vague language to avoid commitment: We zullen ons best doen om... (We will do our best to...), Er wordt gekeken naar mogelijkheden... (Possibilities are being examined...).
Polarization strategies: Words like wij vs zij (us vs them), de elite, het volk create in-group/out-group dynamics. Understanding these patterns enables you to engage critically with Dutch media and politics.
