Was / Waren + Adjectives
In Dutch, to describe how something was in the past, you use the imperfect tense of zijn: was (singular) and waren (plural).
Conjugation
- ik/hij/zij/het was → I/he/she/it was
- jij was (or was jij? in questions)
- wij/jullie/zij waren → we/you/they were
Describing past experiences
Simply combine was/waren with an adjective:
- Het was leuk → It was fun
- De mensen waren aardig → The people were nice
- Het eten was heerlijk → The food was delicious
Example: "Het concert was fantastisch, maar het was ook heel druk." → "The concert was fantastic, but it was also very crowded."
The special word: gezellig
Gezellig is a uniquely Dutch concept meaning cozy, convivial, warm and pleasant. There is no exact English translation.
- Het was heel gezellig → It was really nice/cozy (great atmosphere)
Negative descriptions

- Het was helemaal niet goed → It was not good at all
