Talking About Weather

"Het is + adjective"

The simplest weather pattern:

Het is warm. (It's warm.)
Het is koud. (It's cold.)
Het is bewolkt. (It's cloudy.)
Het is zonnig. (It's sunny.)

Impersonal verbs: "het regent / het sneeuwt"

Some weather verbs use het as subject:

Het regent. (It's raining.)
Het sneeuwt. (It's snowing.)
Het waait. (It's windy.)
Het onweert. (There's a thunderstorm.)

Weather vocabulary

het weer — the weather
de zon — the sun
de regen — the rain
de wind — the wind
de wolk — the cloud
de sneeuw — the snow

"Het is mooi weer" vs. "het is slecht weer"

Mooi weer = nice weather
Slecht weer = bad weather
Lekker weer = lovely weather (colloquial)

Tip: "Ik heb het koud" (I'm cold) uses "hebben", not "zijn". Same for "ik heb het warm".

Erros frequentes

De zon schijnt.
Don't say "it is sun". Say "the sun shines" (de zon schijnt).
~~Het regent buiten.~~
Het regent.
"Het regent" is the standard impersonal construction. "Buiten" is optional.
~~Het is bewolken.~~
Het is bewolkt.
Use the adjective "bewolkt" (cloudy), not the verb "bewolken".
~~Ik ben koud.~~
Ik heb het koud.
In Dutch, use "ik heb het koud" (I have it cold), not "ik ben koud".
