Handling Difficult Questions
At C1, you must handle challenging, hostile, or unexpected questions smoothly in Chinese.
Strategies for difficult questions:
- Buy time — Repeat or rephrase the question: (Do you mean to say...?)
(That is a good question, but more important is...)
(Before answering, I want to clarify one point)
(This question is not convenient to answer at this time)
(I believe the real issue lies in...)
Tone management: Maintaining 语气缓和 (a softened tone) while staying 立场坚定 (firm in your position) is the mark of a skilled communicator. Avoid becoming defensive — respond with calm authority.
Rhetorical questions as tools: Using (Are we really going to ignore this point?)
