Distinguishing Near-Synonyms in Chinese
Chinese has many near-synonyms that learners at C1 level must use precisely. The key is understanding semantic, stylistic, and collocational differences.
Classic pairs to master:
- 看 vs 看见 vs 看到 — 看 = the act of looking; 看见 / 看到 = to notice or perceive (result)
- 担心 vs 担忧 — 担心 is everyday worry; 担忧 is a more formal, serious concern
- 认为 vs 觉得 — 认为 expresses a reasoned opinion; 觉得 is more gut-feeling or perception
- 突然 vs 忽然 — Both mean "suddenly" but 突然 often implies unexpectedness with impact; 忽然 is more neutral
- 继续 vs 坚持 — 继续 = to continue (an activity); 坚持 = to persist (despite difficulty)
Key principle: Check collocations (搭配). A word may feel synonymous but only one fits a given context: 他坚持锻炼 (he persists in exercising) but NOT 他继续锻炼得很好 (grammatically odd for "he keeps exercising well").
Exam tip: When in doubt, consider register. 担忧 fits a formal essay; 担心 fits spoken Chinese.

他突然离开了。他忽然离开了。Both work but 突然 carries more drama — 忽然 is more neutral and often better for simple narration
