In Spanish, possessive adjectives go before the noun and agree in number (but not gender for mi/tu/su):

  • my → Singular: mi / Plural: mis
  • your (informal) → Singular: tu / Plural: tus
  • his/her/your (formal) → Singular: su / Plural: sus

Example: "Mi madre es doctora." → "My mother is a doctor."

Example: "Mis hermanos son altos." → "My brothers are tall."

The verb tener (to have)

Tener is irregular in the present tense and is one of the most important verbs in Spanish:

  • yo → tengo
  • tú → tienes
  • él/ella/usted → tiene
  • nosotros → tenemos
  • ellos/ustedes → tienen

Example: "Tengo dos hermanas." → "I have two sisters."

Example: "¿Tienes hijos?" → "Do you have children?"

Possessive must agree in number: mis (plural) before a plural noun

  • Ella tiene dos hermana.
    Ella tiene dos hermanas.

Nouns must be plural after a number greater than one

  • Mi padre tene 50 años.
    Mi padre tiene 50 años.

Irregular form: tiene (not tene) for the third person singular of tener

  • Tengo tres hijo.
    Tengo tres hijos.

The noun must be pluralized to match the number

  • Su hermana tienen un gato.
    Su hermana tiene un gato.

Su hermana is singular, so the verb must be tiene (singular), not tienen (plural)
