Creative Writing in Russian
Russian literary prose has a sophisticated tradition. At C2, you can deploy the full arsenal of narrative technique — free indirect discourse, layered subtext, and precisely calibrated rhythm.
Free Indirect Discourse (Несобственно-прямая речь)
One of Russian literature's great strengths — the narrator merges with a character's perspective:
- Direct: Он подумал: «Жизнь бессмысленна.»
- Indirect: Он подумал, что жизнь бессмысленна.
- Free indirect: Жизнь бессмысленна. Зачем продолжать?
The third form gives intimacy without quotation marks — hallmark of Tolstoy and Chekhov.
Descriptive Economy
Russian literary style prizes точность over verbosity:
- Avoid: Солнце было очень яркое и красивое.
- Prefer: Солнце слепило. (The sun blinded.)
Subtext and the Unsaid
Chekhov's principle: Если в первом акте на стене висит ружьё... — everything must earn its place. Subtext is what's not said:
- Он промолчал. (He said nothing — loaded with meaning)
- Она улыбнулась и вышла. (She smiled and left — ambiguity is the point)
Building Rhythm
Vary sentence length deliberately. Short sentences create tension. Longer, more complex sentences — those that spiral through subordinate clauses and return to the main thought — create contemplative depth.
