Concise Writing in Russian
Russian is often described as rich and complex, but C1 writers must master the art of precision and economy. Bureaucratic and academic Russian often suffers from verbosity — at this level, you learn to cut without losing meaning.
Principles of concise Russian writing:
1. Eliminate pleonasms and tautology: Avoid pairs like «свободная вакансия» (free vacancy), «памятный сувенир» (memorable souvenir), «завершить до конца» (finish to completion) — each is inherently redundant.
2. Replace verbal noun chains: «осуществить проведение» → «провести»; «произвести оплату» → «оплатить». Single verbs replace bloated verbal noun constructions.
3. Cut introductory filler: Words like «следует отметить, что», «необходимо подчеркнуть», «как уже было сказано» often add nothing — remove them unless genuinely needed for emphasis.
4. Prefer active to passive: «Отчёт был написан сотрудником» → «Сотрудник написал отчёт» — shorter and clearer.
5. Use participles and gerunds to compress: «Он открыл дверь и вошёл» → «Открыв дверь, он вошёл» — one clause instead of two.
Common conciseness errors to avoid:
- «В целях осуществления» → «Для»
- «В настоящее время» → «Сейчас» (in informal register)
- «В связи с тем, что» → «Так как» / «Поскольку»
Rule of thumb: If removing a word does not change meaning — remove it.
