Russian seasons use specific prepositions for time. Весной / летом / осенью / зимой (instrumental case without preposition) means "in spring/summer/autumn/winter". This is one of the most common uses of the instrumental for time.
Key constructions:
— In spring it often rains. (instrumental season)
— In winter there are hard frosts. (бывают = there tend to be)
— What is the weather like today?
— It is cold / warm / hot outside. (impersonal)
— Can one swim in the river in summer?
— One must not go without a hat in the frost. (нельзя + infinitive)
For temperatures: градус мороза = degrees below zero; градус тепла = degrees above zero. «Минус пять» (minus five) or «пять градусов мороза» (five degrees of frost) are both used.
