Formal vs Informal Greetings

Russian has two levels of politeness, just like many European languages.

Informal (ты - ty): Use with friends, family, children, and peers your own age. Formal (вы - vy): Use with strangers, older people, teachers, and in professional settings.

Greetings by time of day:

  • Доброе утро (Dobroye utro) — Good morning
  • Добрый день (Dobryy den') — Good afternoon
  • Добрый вечер (Dobryy vecher) — Good evening
  • Спокойной ночи (Spokóynoy nochi) — Good night

The verb «быть» (to be) in present tense: In Russian, the verb "to be" is usually omitted in present tense!

  • Я студент. → I am a student. (no "am")
  • Ты русский? → Are you Russian? (no "are")

Introducing yourself:

  • Меня зовут Анна. → My name is Anna.
  • Очень приятно! → Very pleased to meet you!
