Narrating Your Career: Pretérito Perfeito vs Imperfeito

Use perfeito for completed events and imperfeito for descriptions/habits:

  • Estudei engenharia na universidade. (I studied engineering at university — completed.)
  • Trabalhava numa empresa pequena. (I used to work in a small company — ongoing past.)
  • Candidatei-me a vários empregos. (I applied to several jobs — completed.)

Sequencing a Career Timeline

  • Primeiro, fiz um estágio. (First, I did an internship.)
  • Depois, comecei a trabalhar. (Then, I started working.)
  • Mais tarde, fui promovido. (Later, I was promoted.)
  • Atualmente, sou gestor. (Currently, I am a manager.)

"Desde" for Duration

  • Trabalho aqui desde 2020. (I've been working here since 2020.)
  • Desde que acabei o curso, trabalho nesta área. (Since I finished the course, I've worked in this field.)

Talking About Qualifications

  • Tenho formação em marketing. (I have a background in marketing.)
  • Tenho experiência em vendas. (I have experience in sales.)

Tip: In Portugal, "currículo" refers to the CV document. "Percurso profissional" is used to describe your overall career trajectory.
