Countries and Nationalities
In Portuguese, nationalities change depending on gender. Most follow this pattern:
- -o (masculine) / -a (feminine): português → portuguesa
- -ês (masculine) / -esa (feminine): francês → francesa
💬 Example: "Eu sou português." → "I am Portuguese." (male)
💬 Example: "Ela é brasileira." → "She is Brazilian."
Definite Articles (o, a, os, as)
Portuguese has four definite articles that agree in gender and number:
- o → the (masculine singular): o país
- a → the (feminine singular): a cidade
- os → the (masculine plural): os países
- as → the (feminine plural): as cidades
Unlike English, Portuguese uses articles before country names: o Brasil, a França, os Estados Unidos.
