Concise writing in Korean
C1 writers must cut unnecessary words while preserving meaning. Korean has several common traps that inflate sentence length.
Common wordiness patterns to eliminate:
- -는 것이다 → replace with a direct verb ending when possible.
- Wordy: 목표는 성장하는 것이다 → Concise: 목표는 성장이다.
- 이미 + 과거형: 이미 (already) is redundant with past tense endings.
- Wordy: 이미 완료됐다 → Concise: 완료됐다.
- 인해서/로 인해서 (due to): often replaceable with a direct causal particle.
- Wordy: 비로 인해서 → Concise: 비 때문에.
Active vs. passive voice: Korean often uses passive structures (-되다, -아/어지다) where active voice would be stronger:
- Passive: 보고서가 작성됐다 (The report was written)
- Active: 팀이 보고서를 작성했다 (The team wrote the report)
Key rule: Every word should earn its place. If removing a word does not change meaning, cut it.

Veelgemaakte fouten
목표는 성장하는 것이다목표는 성장이다The -는 것이다 structure adds length without adding meaning; a simple noun predicate is more concise.
이미 완료됐다완료됐다이미 (already) is redundant with a past tense verb; the past tense already implies completion.
비로 인해서 지연됐다비 때문에 지연됐다인해서 is a lengthier causal form; 때문에 conveys the same meaning more directly.
보고서가 팀에 의해 작성됐다팀이 보고서를 작성했다The passive with 에 의해 is weak and wordy; active voice with a clear subject is more direct and concise.
사실상 거의 대부분의 경우에대부분의 경우에사실상 and 거의 are redundant when combined with 대부분; choose one qualifier, not three.
