Critical Proofreading in Japanese

Proofreading Japanese text requires attention to kanji usage, consistency, and common C1-level errors.

漢字の使い分け (kanji no tsukaiwake) refers to choosing the correct kanji when multiple options exist for the same reading. This is a hallmark of C1 writing.

聞く (hear) vs 聴く (listen actively)

見る (see) vs 観る (watch/view deliberately)

作る (make) vs 造る (build/construct)

表記揺れ (hyouki yure) is notation inconsistency, such as switching between katakana and hiragana for the same word, or mixing different kanji for the same concept.

✗ サーバー / サーバ (inconsistent)

✓ サーバー throughout (consistent)

When proofreading, check for: 誤字 (wrong characters), 脱字 (missing characters), 表記揺れ (notation inconsistency), and 整合性 (logical coherence). The process of 推敲 (polishing) involves reading the text multiple times, each time focusing on a different aspect. Master this and your writing quality will approach native level.
