Making Requests and Expressing Feelings

Non-violent communication in Japanese relies on specific grammar patterns that soften requests and center the speaker's feelings rather than blaming others.

てほしい expresses wanting someone to do something: もっと話を聞いてほしい (I want you to listen to me more). It is direct but personal, focusing on your own desire.

ていただけませんか is a very polite request form: 少し時間をいただけませんか (Could you give me a little time?). This humble form shows great respect and is ideal for sensitive conversations.

ようにお願いする is used for formal or indirect requests: 静かにするようにお願いします (I would like to ask you to be quiet). It softens the request by framing it as a wish.

という気持ち allows you to name and own your feelings: 寂しいという気持ちを伝えたい (I want to express the feeling of loneliness). This pattern is central to NVC — it separates observation from emotion.

Using these patterns together enables compassionate, non-judgmental communication in Japanese.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • 聞いてほしいです
    聞いてほしい

てほしい does not take です in casual emotional expression

  • 時間をいただけませんですか
    時間をいただけませんか

ませんか already includes politeness; adding です is incorrect

  • 静かにするお願いします
    静かにするようにお願いします

ように is needed to connect the verb to お願いする

  • 寂しいの気持ち
    寂しいという気持ち

Use という to connect an adjective to 気持ち, not の

  • 聞いていただきませんか
    聞いていただけませんか

The potential form いただける is needed, not いただく
