Critical Proofreading in Italian

At C1 level, proofreading goes beyond catching typos. It means scrutinising coherence, cohesion, and style — and recognising subtle errors that even advanced learners make.

1. Common C1-Level Errors

Even proficient writers stumble on: congiuntivo after verbs of opinion (Credo che sia, not Credo che è), consecutive pronouns (Glielo dico, not Gli lo dico), and agreement in compound tenses with direct object pronouns (Le ho viste, not Le ho visto). A systematic proofreading pass dedicated to these patterns catches most slips.

2. Advanced False Friends

At C1, false friends are subtler than libreria/library. Watch for: sensibile (sensitive, not sensible → sensato), eventualmente (possibly, not eventually → alla fine), pretendere (to demand, not to pretend → fingere), attuale (current, not actual → effettivo), and morbido (soft, not morbid → macabro).

Proofreading Strategy

Read your text three times with different lenses: first for meaning and logic, second for grammar and syntax, third for style and register consistency.

C1 tip: Read your text aloud. Your ear catches awkward rhythms and repetitions that your eye misses.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Credo che questo è il problema principale.
Credo che questo sia il problema principale.

After credo che, the subjunctive (sia) is required, not the indicative (è).

  • Gli lo ho detto ieri.
    Glielo ho detto ieri.

The indirect + direct pronoun combination gli + lo contracts to glielo, not gli lo.

  • La situazione attuale non è quella reale.
La situazione attuale non è quella effettiva.

Attuale means current, not actual. The false friend for actual is effettivo.

  • Le ragazze, le ho visto al parco.
Le ragazze, le ho viste al parco.

With a preceding direct object pronoun (le), the past participle must agree in gender and number (viste).

  • Eventualmente, ci vedremo domani.
    Alla fine, ci vedremo domani.

Eventualmente means possibly/if needed, not eventually. Use alla fine or infine for eventually.
