Quantifiers

In Italian, to express a specific quantity when shopping, you use a measurement word followed by di (of). The structure is always: quantity + di + product.

Common quantifiers:

• una bottiglia di (a bottle of) → una bottiglia di acqua (a bottle of water)
• un chilo di (a kilo of) → un chilo di mele (a kilo of apples)
• mezzo chilo di (half a kilo of) → mezzo chilo di pomodori (half a kilo of tomatoes)
• un etto di (100 grams of) → un etto di prosciutto (100g of ham)
• un pacchetto di (a packet of) → un pacchetto di pasta (a packet of pasta)
• una lattina di (a can of) → una lattina di aranciata (a can of orange soda)
• un litro di (a litre of) → un litro di latte (a litre of milk)
• una scatola di (a box of) → una scatola di biscotti (a box of biscuits)
• un pezzo di (a piece of) → un pezzo di formaggio (a piece of cheese)

Useful phrases for shopping:

• Vorrei... → I'd like...
• Mi dà... → Can you give me...
• Quanto costa / costano? → How much does it / do they cost?
• Basta così, grazie. → That's enough, thanks.
• Altro? → Anything else? (the shopkeeper may ask this)

Asking for a specific amount:

• Vorrei due chili di arance. → I'd like two kilos of oranges.
• Mi dà tre etti di prosciutto? → Can you give me 300g of ham?

💬 Esempio: "Vorrei un chilo di mele." → "I would like a kilo of apples."

💬 Esempio: "Prendo una bottiglia di acqua." → "I'll take a bottle of water."

💬 Esempio: "Mi dà due etti di prosciutto crudo?" → "Can you give me 200g of prosciutto?"
