Translation and Adaptation in Hindi

Translation (अनुवाद) is one of the most philosophically complex acts of language. The Hindi translation tradition is ancient — Sanskrit texts were translated into Apabhramsha and then Hindi across centuries — and the questions that animated those translators remain urgent: should a translation be faithful to the word (शब्द) or to the spirit (भाव)?

The two dominant schools in Hindi translation theory are शाब्दिक अनुवाद (literal translation) and भावानुवाद (sense translation). Literal translation preserves lexical fidelity but can produce stilted prose; भावानुवाद sacrifices surface form for communicative equivalence. At C2, you should be able to move fluidly between both modes depending on text type.

Cultural adaptation (सांस्कृतिक रूपांतरण) poses the deepest challenges. When translating English idioms into Hindi — or vice versa — a direct equivalence often does not exist. The translator must choose between foreignisation (विदेशीकरण), which preserves cultural distance, and domestication (देशीकरण), which naturalises the text for local readers.

Poetry translation is perhaps the most extreme test. Translating Keats into Hindi requires decisions about metre (छन्द), rhyme (तुकबंदी), and which Sanskrit or Urdu poetic conventions best approximate the original affect. Ajneya s translations and Kedarnath Singh s own work on translation theory offer essential models.

The concept of समतुल्यता (equivalence) has been critiqued by postcolonial translation scholars who argue that no translation is ever neutral — it always carries power, ideology, and the translator s own cultural position within it.

Uitdrukkingen

  • मूल-भाव को सुरक्षित रखनाto preserve the original meaning/spirit
  • शब्दानुवाद से बचनाto avoid word-for-word translation
  • सांस्कृतिक संदर्भ को ध्यान में रखनाto keep cultural context in mind
  • अनुवाद में छूट लेनाto take liberties in translation
  • लक्ष्य-पाठक के अनुसार ढालनाto adapt to the target reader
  • भाषाओं के बीच सेतु बनानाto build a bridge between languages

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • He kicked the bucket → उसने बाल्टी को लात मारी
    उसने दम तोड़ दिया

Literal translation of idioms produces nonsense; दम तोड़ना is the Hindi idiomatic equivalent for dying

  • It rains cats and dogs → बिल्लियाँ और कुत्ते बरस रहे हैं
    मूसलाधार बारिश हो रही है

Idioms must be domesticated; मूसलाधार (torrential) is the natural Hindi equivalent

  • Break a leg → टाँग तोड़ो
    शुभकामनाएँ / ईश्वर करे सब ठीक हो

Theatrical good-luck idiom has no Hindi equivalent; a functional translation conveys the intent

  • शाब्दिक अनुवाद हमेशा सही होता है
    भावानुवाद प्रायः अधिक प्रभावी होता है

Literal translation is not always accurate; sense translation better serves communicative equivalence

  • अनुवाद में संस्कृति को नज़रअंदाज़ करना
    सांस्कृतिक रूपांतरण अनिवार्य है

Ignoring cultural context produces unnatural translations; adaptation is integral to mastery-level translation
