Literary stylistic devices in German

German literature employs Stilmittel (stylistic devices) that a C2 reader must recognise and use.

Metaphor and metonymy:

  • Das Leben ist eine Reise. → Life is a journey. (metaphor)
  • Berlin hat entschieden. → Berlin has decided. (metonymy: city for government)

Litotes:

  • Das ist nicht uninteressant. → That is not uninteresting. (= very interesting)
  • Er ist kein Dummkopf. → He is no fool. (= he is clever)

Hyperbole (Hyperbel):

  • Ich habe dir das schon tausendmal gesagt. → I have told you a thousand times.
  • Er wartet eine Ewigkeit. → He waits an eternity.

Allegory:

  • Kafka uses complex allegories: Die Verwandlung (The Metamorphosis) is an allegory of social alienation.

Mastering these devices allows you to analyse German literature and enrich your own writing.
