Relative clauses (Relativsätze) let you add information about a noun. The relative pronoun must match the gender and number of the noun it refers to, while its case depends on its role in the relative clause.
Nominative relative pronouns:
- der (masculine): Der Mann, der viel postet, ist mein Freund. (The man who posts a lot is my friend.)
- die (feminine): Die Frau, die das Foto geteilt hat, ist Journalistin. (The woman who shared the photo is a journalist.)
- das (neuter): Das Kind, das Videos schaut, ist müde. (The child that watches videos is tired.)
- die (plural): Die Leute, die online sind, wissen alles. (The people who are online know everything.)
Key rules:
- The relative clause is set off by commas
- The verb goes to the end of the relative clause
- The relative pronoun comes right after the comma
