Metre and Rhythm in French Poetry
French poetry counts syllables, not stressed beats. The most iconic form is the alexandrin (12 syllables):
"Je suis le ténébreux, — le veuf, — l'inconsolé" (Nerval) — 12 syllables
Key rules:
- A mute e at the end of a word counts as a syllable before a consonant
- Hiatus (two vowels meeting) is traditionally avoided
