Comparatives & "il y a"
Comparatives
To compare things in French, use plus... que (more than), moins... que (less than), or aussi... que (as... as):
- Mon appartement est plus grand que ta chambre. — My apartment is bigger than your room.
- Ce quartier est moins bruyant que le centre. — This area is less noisy than the centre.
- Ma cuisine est aussi grande que la tienne. — My kitchen is as big as yours.
For superlatives, add le/la/les before plus or moins:
- C'est la plus belle maison du quartier. — It's the most beautiful house in the area.
Il y a / Il n'y a pas de
Use il y a to say "there is" or "there are":
- Il y a un balcon. — There is a balcony.
- Il n'y a pas de jardin. — There is no garden.
Note: After pas de, always use de (not un/une/des).
