Imperative & Sequencing Words
The Imperative (l'impératif)
Recipes use the imperative to give instructions. It has three forms — tu, nous, and vous — without the subject pronoun:
- Coupe les oignons. — Cut the onions. (tu)
- Mélangeons la farine. — Let's mix the flour. (nous)
- Ajoutez le sel. — Add the salt. (vous)
For -er verbs, drop the -s from the tu form: Tu coupes → Coupe!
Sequencing Words
To explain steps in order, use these connectors:
- D'abord — First: D'abord, coupez les légumes.
- Ensuite / Puis — Then/Next: Ensuite, faites cuire les oignons.
- Enfin — Finally: Enfin, servez chaud.
- Pendant ce temps — Meanwhile: Pendant ce temps, préparez la sauce.
