Asking "What's your name?"

There are two ways to ask someone's name:

  • Comment tu t'appelles ? — informal (friends, peers)
  • Comment vous appelez-vous ? — formal (strangers, elders)

Je m'appelle Sophie. — My name is Sophie.

Subject Pronouns

French subject pronouns you need right now:

  • Tu — You (informal, one person)

Il s'appelle Marc. — His name is Marc.

Elle habite à Paris. — She lives in Paris.

Questions with "Comment"

Comment means "how" and is used to form questions:

Comment ça va ? — How are you?

Comment tu t'appelles ? — What's your name?

    Do not add est after appelle — the verb already means am called

  • Il s'appelle est Marc

    Same rule: no est needed after s'appelle
