Het postwaarheidstijdperk: taalstructuren van twijfel

De term post-truth werd door Oxford Dictionaries uitgeroepen tot woord van het jaar 2016: "relating to circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief."

  • "The claim is unsubstantiated by any peer-reviewed evidence." — feitelijke twijfel
  • "One might question the epistemological assumptions underlying this narrative." — filosofische twijfel
  • "The framing of this report appears to serve particular ideological interests." — structurele twijfel
  • "While not provably false, this statement is deliberately misleading." — retorische twijfel

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Fake news is when the news is false.
Disinformation refers to deliberately fabricated or misleading content designed to deceive; 'fake news' has become a politically weaponised term and should be used with care.

'Fake news' is politiek geladen en analytisch onnauwkeurig. Gebruik in academische of journalistieke context liever *disinformation* of *misinformation*.

  • The politician lied about the economy.
The politician's statements on the economy were inconsistent with verified data and appear to have been deliberately misleading.

  • Social media causes polarisation.
Algorithmic amplification on social media platforms has been shown to exacerbate existing societal divisions by disproportionately promoting emotionally engaging — often polarising — content.

'Causes' suggereert onbewezen directe causaliteit. 'Has been shown to exacerbate' is preciezer en epistemologisch zorgvuldiger.

  • Misinformation and disinformation are the same thing.
Misinformation refers to false information spread without intent to deceive; disinformation involves deliberate intent — the distinction is legally and analytically significant.

  • The post-truth era means nobody believes anything.
The post-truth era is characterised not by universal scepticism, but by a selective rejection of inconvenient facts and an increased reliance on emotionally resonant narratives.

  • The article was biased because the journalist had an opinion.
The article exhibited bias — but having an opinion is not itself a journalistic failing. Bias refers to a systematic distortion of evidence, not the mere presence of a perspective.
