The Power of Dutch Words

Some Dutch words capture concepts that other languages struggle to express. These culturally loaded words reveal the Dutch soul and are the ultimate markers of C2 fluency.

Gezellig is the most famous untranslatable Dutch word. It describes a warm, convivial atmosphere — a cozy evening with friends, a charming café, even a well-decorated room. The negative ongezellig (not-gezellig) is equally powerful. Dutch people use it constantly: Wat gezellig! (How nice/cozy!).

Uitwaaien means to walk in the wind to clear your head — a uniquely Dutch concept in a flat, windy country. Zullen we even uitwaaien? (Shall we go out for a blow?) is a genuine wellness practice.

Niksen (doing nothing intentionally) gained international attention as a Dutch approach to mindfulness. Unlike laziness, niksen is deliberate rest without guilt.

Gedogen means to officially tolerate something that is technically illegal — the foundation of Dutch drug policy. Gedoogbeleid (toleration policy) is Dutch pragmatism in a word.

Polderen (from the poldermodel) describes the Dutch consensus-building approach where all parties negotiate until agreement is reached. It comes from the historical need to cooperate in water management.

Lekker is incredibly versatile: lekker eten (tasty food), lekker weer (nice weather), lekker slapen (sleep well), lekker bezig (having fun doing something). It is perhaps the most Dutch word after gezellig.
