Soms, Zeker & Misschien

Epistemic particles in Dutch express degrees of certainty and doubt. Mastering them adds precision and nuance to your speech.

Soms (sometimes, perhaps — rhetorical):

• Perhaps (suspicious): Je denkt toch niet soms dat... (You don't think perhaps that...) — implies disbelief
• By any chance: Heb je soms iets te verbergen? (Do you perhaps have something to hide?)

Zeker (certainly, surely — but often ironic):

• Certainly: Dat is zeker waar. (That is certainly true.)
• Ironic/sarcastic: Je hebt zeker weer niet gestudeerd? (You certainly did not study again?) — the speaker expects a yes
• I suppose: Je wilt zeker mee? (You want to come along, I suppose?)

Misschien / wellicht / allicht:

• Misschien — informal: Misschien komt hij nog. (Maybe he will still come.)
• Wellicht — formal: Wellicht is het raadzaam om... (Perhaps it would be advisable to...)
• Allicht — of course / naturally: Allicht weet hij dat! (Of course he knows that!)

The choice between these particles reveals your attitude toward the proposition. Zeker can be genuine or sarcastic depending on intonation and context.
