To describe your neighbourhood, combine er with prepositions. Er is een park in de buurt (There is a park nearby). Use location words: naast (next to), tegenover (opposite), op de hoek (on the corner). De bakker is naast de apotheek (The bakery is next to the pharmacy). When er replaces a location already mentioned, it moves: In mijn buurt? Er is een supermarkt becomes more natural than repeating the location. Use er + naartoe for direction: Ga je er vaak naartoe? (Do you go there often?). Dutch neighbourhoods often have a bakker, slager (butcher), and kaaswinkel (cheese shop) — very typical!
