The Untranslatable in Chinese
Chinese contains concepts so culturally embedded that translation always involves loss. Understanding these gaps is a mark of true C2 mastery.
面子 (Miànzi) — Face
面子 is social face: the reputation you maintain in public. It is not the same as self-esteem or pride.
- 给面子 (give face): showing deference to allow someone to maintain reputation
- 丢面子 (lose face): public humiliation
- 撑面子 (prop up face): spending beyond means to appear successful
No European language fully captures this social-transactional dimension.
缘分 (Yuánfèn) — Predestined Connection
缘分 denotes the invisible thread that connects two people — whether friends, lovers, or strangers who meet by chance. It comes from Buddhist 缘起 (dependent origination).
You cannot translate it as "fate" alone — fate implies inevitability. 缘分 implies something more like "the conditions were right for this meeting."
差不多 (Chà bu duō) — Close Enough
This phrase embodies a worldview: perfectionism is not always the highest value. 差不多 can mean:
- A mathematical approximation ("about 50%")
- A pragmatic compromise ("good enough")
- Passive resignation ("it'll do")
The Chinese writer Lin Yutang wrote an entire satirical essay about 差不多 as a national character trait — read it alongside this lesson for full cultural depth.

Veelgemaakte fouten
面子就是自尊心。面子是社会性的声誉,与个人内心的自尊心(里子)有所区别。面子 is social/public reputation, not inner self-esteem (里子). Conflating them loses the public/private distinction.
缘分是命运。缘分与命运不同:它强调两人相遇的条件,而非不可避免的结果。缘分 emphasises the conditions for a meeting; fate (命运) emphasises inevitability. The Buddhist-derived meaning matters.
差不多是中文里几乎的意思。差不多既可表示数量近似,也可表达凑合就行的态度,具体含义取决于语境。差不多 has both a quantitative sense (approximately) and a philosophical sense (good enough). Context determines which applies.
韵味可以直接翻译成charm。韵味兼含艺术共鸣与情感余韵,是比英文charm更有深度的美学概念。Charm is too superficial. 韵味 implies a lingering quality that rewards reflection — a specifically Chinese aesthetic concept.
随缘就是没有目标。随缘是道家顺应自然流动的哲学,而非消极或放弃目标。随缘 is an active philosophical stance from Taoism — not passivity or aimlessness.
