Rhetorical Questions and Emphasis in Chinese

At C1 level, knowing how to emphasise a point forcefully is a mark of sophistication.

Rhetorical Questions

Key markers:

  • 难道 + positive statement → implies "of course not"
→ "Surely you know?" (implies you do)
  • 岂不是 → "isn't this exactly...?" (logical implication)
  • "Doesn't this prove our judgment was correct?"
  • 何尝 → "has it ever been that..." (denial of past)
  • "It is not that he never wanted to succeed — he just didn't try hard enough."

Emphasis Structures

才... — it is precisely X that causes Y
  • "It is precisely this perseverance that enabled him to achieve what he has today."
  • 无非是 — nothing but (minimising or revealing true nature)
  • "What he said is nothing but the same old platitudes."
  • 莫非 — softer, more literary "could it be that..." (suspicion or inference)
  • "Could it be that he already knew about this?"

Uitdrukkingen

Rhetorical: does this need explanation?
Emphasis: this spirit created today's success
Rhetorical: it's not that he doesn't understand
Literary inference: could it be more complex
Idiom: nothing but a change of form, not substance

Veelgemaakte fouten

难道 should precede a negated verb to imply the expected answer is yes — placing it with positive verb reverses the meaning

才 requires 才 for the result clause. Using 所以 is informal and breaks the rhetorical structure

无非是 reveals a negative or hollow truth. Using it for compliments or virtues is semantically wrong
