Reading Academic Articles in Chinese

Chinese academic texts have a distinct style. Understanding their structure makes comprehension much easier.

Structure of a Chinese Academic Article

  • 标题 (title) → 摘要 (abstract, ~200–300 chars) → 关键词 (keywords)
  • 引言/前言 (introduction) → 文献综述 (literature review)
  • 研究方法 (research methods) → 结果与讨论 (results and discussion)
  • 结论 (conclusion) → 参考文献 (references)

Nominalisation — a key feature

Chinese academic writing uses noun-heavy constructions:

  • Verb: 研究 (to research) → Noun: 本研究旨在探讨... (This research aims to investigate...)
  • Verb: 分析 (to analyse) → Noun: 通过对数据的分析... (Through analysis of the data...)

💬 Example: "本文通过对近年来相关文献的综合梳理,就该领域的研究现状进行系统分析。"

→ "This paper systematically analyses the current state of research in this field through a comprehensive review of recent relevant literature."

Academic passive voice

Chinese passive uses 被 for negative events but avoids it in formal academic writing. Instead:

  • 研究表明... (Research indicates that...)
  • 数据显示... (Data shows that...)
  • 结果证实... (Results confirm that...)

Uitdrukkingen

  • 本文旨在探讨以下问题Academic opener: this paper aims to examine
  • 根据现有文献,可以认为Citing literature: based on existing literature
  • 研究结果表明,该假设成立Results: the hypothesis is supported
  • 这与前人研究结论相吻合Aligning with prior research
  • 然而,这一结论尚存争议Academic caution: this conclusion is still debated

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • 这篇文章说了很多关于气候变化的东西
    该文就气候变化问题进行了系统性的论述

Academic Chinese requires precise verbs like 论述 and demonstratives like 该 instead of conversational 这篇/说了

  • 我认为这个假设是对的
    本研究认为此假设具有一定合理性

Academic writing uses 本研究 for first person and hedged verbs — 是对的 is too casual and absolute

  • 结果好像支持了这个理论
    结果在一定程度上印证了该理论的合理性

好像 is too vague and colloquial for academic writing — use 在一定程度上 for appropriate hedging
