Understanding Emotions in Chinese
Chinese has a rich vocabulary for emotional states that goes beyond simple translations. At B2 level, you learn to express nuanced emotional experiences and discuss psychological concepts.
---
The Grammar of 感到 and 觉得
Both express "to feel," but with different nuances:
- 感到 (gǎndào) — physical or emotional sensation, more formal:
我感到非常焦虑。(Wǒ gǎndào fēicháng jiāolǜ.) — I feel very anxious.
- 觉得 (juéde) — subjective opinion or inner feeling, more conversational:
我觉得他不理解我。(Wǒ juéde tā bù lǐjiě wǒ.) — I feel like he doesn't understand me.
---
Describing Emotional States
Use 心情 (xīnqíng — mood) and 情绪 (qíngxù — emotion):
我最近心情不太好。(Wǒ zuìjìn xīnqíng bù tài hǎo.) — I haven't been in a good mood lately.
她的情绪起伏很大。(Tā de qíngxù qǐfú hěn dà.) — Her emotions fluctuate greatly.
---
Expressing Emotional Reactions
把…发泄出来 — to vent / release:
他需要把愤怒发泄出来。(Tā xūyào bǎ fènnù fāxiè chūlái.) — He needs to vent his anger.
压抑情绪 — to suppress emotions:
长期压抑情绪会影响健康。(Chángqī yāyì qíngxù huì yǐngxiǎng jiànkāng.) — Long-term emotional suppression can affect health.
---
Empathy and Understanding
我能理解你的感受。(Wǒ néng lǐjiě nǐ de gǎnshòu.) — I can understand how you feel.
换位思考有助于培养共情能力。(Huànwèi sīkǎo yǒuzhù yú péiyǎng gòngqíng nénglì.)
— Perspective-taking helps develop empathy.
Uitdrukkingen
- 我能理解你的感受I can understand how you feel — the most natural empathetic expression in Chinese for showing emotional understanding
- 我感到非常焦虑I feel very anxious — 感到 is used for physical or emotional sensations, more formal than 觉得
- 她的情绪起伏很大Her emotions fluctuate greatly — 起伏 literally means rise and fall, used for emotional ups and downs
- 把愤怒发泄出来To vent anger / release anger — the 把 construction moves the emotion as a direct object, with 发泄出来 as the resultative complement
- 长期压抑情绪会影响健康Long-term emotional suppression can affect health — used when discussing the psychological impact of not expressing feelings
- 换位思考有助于培养共情能力Perspective-taking helps develop empathy — a nuanced B2 phrase for discussing emotional intelligence
Veelgemaakte fouten
我觉到他很生气。我感到他很生气。觉 cannot be used alone as a verb — use 感到 (feel/sense) or 觉得 (think/feel). 觉到 is not a standard verb; 感到 is the correct choice when describing perceived emotions
她把情绪压抑了出来。她把情绪发泄出来了。压抑 means to suppress, which is the opposite of releasing. To express releasing emotions use 发泄出来 (vent out). Mixing 压抑 with 出来 creates a logical contradiction
我能了解你的感受。我能理解你的感受。了解 means to know or be familiar with (factual understanding). For emotional empathy and understanding feelings, use 理解 instead
