Describing People in Chinese
In Chinese, adjectives need 很 (hěn, very) when used as predicates. Without it, the sentence sounds like a comparison.
很 + adjective (basic description)
- 她很高。 (Tā hěn gāo.) → She is tall.
- 他很帅。 (Tā hěn shuài.) → He is handsome.
Note: 很 here doesn't always mean "very" — it's just required grammatically.
Negating with 不
- 她不高。 (Tā bù gāo.) → She is not tall.
- 他不胖。 (Tā bù pàng.) → He is not fat.
Describing appearance
Pattern: Subject + 有 + description
- 她有长头发。 (Tā yǒu cháng tóufa.) → She has long hair.
- 他有大眼睛。 (Tā yǒu dà yǎnjing.) → He has big eyes.
💬 Example: "我妈妈很漂亮，她有长头发。" (Wǒ māma hěn piàoliang, tā yǒu cháng tóufa.) → "My mom is very pretty, she has long hair."
